John Fleming was commissioned to create a public art installation at the intersection of Silverada Blvd. and Oddie Blvd. in Reno, Nevada. His striking metal sculpture spells out “Oddie” in grand cursive letters, with an oversized “O” designed to frame murals. The collaborative vision for the piece invites local Reno artists to contribute murals, ensuring a dynamic showcase of community talent.
For the sculpture’s launch, my John hired me to design the inaugural mural. I created a digital illustration, which was printed onto panels and now greets the Reno public as they pass through the Silverada/Oddie intersection. My artwork will remain on display until the next muralist’s contribution takes its place.
The mural portrays a coyote, in the role of the mythical trickster archetype, using a drifter drill to break free from the dark depths of the earth into radiant daylight. This imagery symbolizes the bloom of newfound hope and the thrill of a eureka moment.
